Design and Technology
Design is not just what it looks like and feels like. Design is how it works.
At Burgh by Sands School, we believe every child is a designer, capable of bringing ideas to life through creativity and hands-on learning. Our Design Technology (DT) curriculum begins in EYFS, where young children are encouraged to explore, imagine, and create.
As pupils grow, they build on these foundations, developing practical skills and an understanding of design that connects to other subjects, including maths and science.
Throughout our DT curriculum, children engage in real-world challenges to help make their learning meaningful. For example, in Year 5 and 6, pupils explore structural engineering by building bridges as part of a “Wild Water” topic, learning to consider both their own and others’ needs in design. Our DT curriculum also incorporates food technology, so every pupil leaves school with knowledge of food and nutrition and the ability to create healthy, delicious dishes.
At Burgh by Sands Schools, we aim to inspire our pupils to think independently and solve problems creatively, equipping them with skills and confidence that will serve them throughout their lives.
