Maths

Mathematics is the key to unlocking the mysteries of the universe!- Buzz Lightyear (Toy Story)

At Burgh by Sands School, we believe that mathematics is an essential skill for life.

Our mathematics curriculum is designed to build confidence, resilience, and a deep understanding of key mathematical concepts. We aim to create enthusiastic problem solvers who can apply their mathematical knowledge to real-life situations and who are prepared for the challenges of the modern world.

Our Approach to Teaching Mathematics

We follow a mastery approach in mathematics, where every child is encouraged to develop a secure and deep understanding of mathematical concepts. Lessons are designed to build fluency, reasoning, and problem-solving skills, ensuring that children progress at a pace that suits their needs.

Key elements of our approach include:

  • Fluency: Developing a strong foundation in number skills, including rapid recall of number facts and the efficient use of written methods.
  • Reasoning: Encouraging children to explain their thinking, justify answers, and make connections between mathematical ideas.
  • Problem-solving: Giving children regular opportunities to apply their knowledge to real-world problems and develop strategies for tackling unfamiliar challenges.

Resources and Tools

We provide a rich variety of resources to support learning in mathematics, including:

  • Manipulatives and visual aids: Tools such as counters, number lines, and base-ten blocks help children explore mathematical concepts in a hands-on way.
  • Interactive technology: We use technology such as interactive whiteboards and math apps to enhance lessons and engage children in learning.

Our curriculum is designed to ensure that children progress through clear stages of learning, from mastering basic number skills in early years through to complex mathematical reasoning in upper key stage 2.

A Focus on Mathematical Understanding

We believe that developing a deep understanding of mathematics is more important than simply memorising procedures. Through careful questioning, guided practice, and collaborative work, we ensure that children:

  • Understand the ‘why’ behind mathematical methods, not just the ‘how.’
  • Are encouraged to explore multiple approaches to solving problems.
  • Develop the ability to think logically and critically, allowing them to tackle problems with confidence.

Real-Life Applications

Mathematics is more than just numbers on a page – it is a key to understanding and interacting with the world around us. We aim to show children how mathematics can be applied in real-life situations. Whether through measuring in science, understanding patterns in art, or calculating distances in geography, we make links across the curriculum to demonstrate the relevance of mathematics.

Progress and Support for All Learners

We believe that all children can succeed in mathematics. Our lessons are carefully structured to ensure progression, with additional support provided for children who need extra help, as well as challenges for those who are ready to go further. Through a combination of whole-class teaching, group work, and independent practice, we ensure that every child is supported to achieve their best.

We regularly assess children’s understanding and provide feedback to guide their next steps. Our goal is for each child to leave Burgh by Sands School with a strong mathematical foundation and the confidence to continue their mathematical journey.

Enrichment Opportunities

To foster a love for mathematics and to broaden children’s experiences, we offer a range of opportunities outside of the regular curriculum, including:

  • Maths challenges and competitions: Children can take part in local and national maths challenges that develop their skills in a fun and competitive environment.
  • Problem-solving days: Special events where children tackle a range of mathematical problems collaboratively, building teamwork and critical thinking.
