Music

Music brings people together. It’s the universal language that everyone can feel.- Ed Sheeran

At Burgh by Sands School, we aim to make music a joyful and fulfilling part of every child’s education. We believe music fosters confidence and creativity, and through a range of engaging musical experiences, we nurture every child’s potential to enjoy and appreciate music in all its forms.

From singing and movement to playing instruments, we ensure children understand the significance of music in the world and provide them with the skills and inspiration to express themselves musically. Our inclusive music program offers every child the opportunity to play instruments, from classroom staples like glockenspiels and recorders to specialised lessons with visiting peripatetic teachers once children are in KS2.

Our school uses the Charanga Musical School scheme, a comprehensive resource that suits both specialist and non-specialist teachers. Charanga covers all National Curriculum requirements and introduces students to diverse music styles and genres through listening, performing, and composing activities. Our approach focuses on developing vocal skills, body movement, and instrument handling in both whole-class and smaller group settings, enabling children to express and appreciate music from various perspectives.

Weekly music lessons ensure consistent exposure, helping students consolidate skills, expand their vocabulary, and collaborate on creative compositions. By revisiting key concepts regularly, we strengthen children’s musical memory and understanding, enhancing their progress over time.

Our carefully structured music curriculum is designed to help children achieve a solid foundation in music knowledge and skill development. Emphasis is placed on progression, with each year building on prior learning. The subject leader regularly monitors progress through observations and discussions with teachers, ensuring quality instruction and effective feedback.

By the time our students leave Burgh by Sands School, they will have developed a broad repertoire, enabling them to create unique compositions and performances. They will have had opportunities to learn a variety of instruments, perform both individually and as part of an ensemble, and showcase their talents to the school community and beyond.
